Tim: Na Wilko, wie geht's? Wie war dein Jahr in North Dakota?

Wilko: It was amazing, man! Ich hatte eine super Zeit und habe viele Leute kennen gelernt. Es war einfach Klasse! Wie war deins?

In Australien habe ich die ganze Zeit heaps of lamb shanks with gravy gegessen. Deutsches Essen ist um einiges gesünder!

Haha. Von Fish and Chips hab' ich die Nase auch so langsam voll, endlich 'mal wieder Kohl und Pinkel! Kam dir das eigentlich auch so vor, dass die Zeit wie im Fluge verging?

Ich kann gar nicht glauben, dass es wirklich fast dreizehn Monate gewesen sein sollen. Mir kommt es noch so vor, als wenn ich gerade erst zum ersten mal in die Century High School gelaufen komme und meine Räume suche. Wie war eigentlich die australische Schule?

Also in Australien bin ich zu einer öffentlichen Schule gegangen. Das war echt cool und ich habe dort viele Freunde gefunden, jedoch muss ich sagen,  dass Privatschulen in Australien definitiv besseren Unterricht und angenehmere Räumlichkeiten haben. Warum reden wir nicht mal in Englisch?

That's a good question. Well, I went to a public school as well and I have to say that my school could have been a private one, too; there were carpets everywhere, every room had cable TV, and there were Plasma TVs on all sides of the commons area. Of course, the sound system was BOSE.

Wow, not bad at all! My school didn't have all that but therefore a lot of free periods. That gave me a lot of time to spend with my host families, friends and to experience the Aussie culture. One of the really funny things in Australia is the Aussie slang - it's just hilarious. For example when you want to explain that you are really exhausted you say: Mate, seriously, I am flatout like a lizard drinking.

Yeah in the US we say words like yo, bro, and man a lot. every sentence starts or ends with man pretty much; it's kind of weird I guess. How was the coming back for you?

Arriving in Germany was a little strange in the beginning. Home did not feel like home right away and it took me something like a week to get over the jet-lag. In the end I am glad to be home again and to see my family, friends and relatives after a whole year! At least I had two and a half weeks of holiday to relax and adjust myself to the German culture again. Did you have a similar experience?

It was exactly the same! Living in another country for such a long time changes a lot of things. Not only do you get to know many new people and experience a lot but the 'new' country becomes the home country in a way. I guess when you are gone from home and you don't see your old friends on a regular basis you can pretty much start over with your life. You can hang out with totally different people for example; you can live your entire life differently and try out new things if you want to. Therefore the 'new' country becomes your home country and your view on Germany really changes a lot.

I know how you feel... But hey, if you guys want to go on exchange as we did than you should have a look at the following exchange programs in Germany. Wieder auf Deutsch: Ein Austausch ist eine super Sache, wo ihr mehr über ein fremdes Land, seine Kultur und Sprache sowie unglaublich viel über euch selbst lernt. Ich hatte das Jahr meines Lebens und kann es euch sehr empfehlen. In Deutschland bieten sich die folgenden Austauschorganisationen an: Rotary, AFS, YFU uvm. Die genannten Beispiele sind gemeinnützige Organisationen und haben sehr lange Erfahrung mit Schüleraustauschen weltweit und sind daher sehr zu empfehlen.

Natürlich muss man seinen Austausch nicht über eine Organisation laufen lassen. Man kann auch, so wie ich es getan habe, selber einen Austausch organisieren. Dies dauert nur wirklich lange und benötigt sehr viel Erfahrung. Auch ist dies nur zu empfehlen, wenn man dann im Partnerland die Austauschfamilie schon kennt und auch an der Austauschschule einen erfahrenen Ansprechpartner hat. Wenn man diese Dinge nicht hat, ist eine Organisation auf jeden Fall zu empfehlen.
