About the title & the story

I think the author chose this title because love is what the book is all about. I mean all the relationships are based on this theme. There is the Derek-Malgosia thing. I thought while reading the book that it may have been possible that Derek would kill himself in the end, but that’s not what happened. Derek is really confused about the deed that Malgosia is Tibor’s lover again. Malgosia herself must be torn apart between these two men. I think she loves Tibor, but she also must have a guilty conscience turning away from the on who loves her, turning away from Derek. But in the end the cause for all these things happening is Tibor. He’s the one who doesn’t feel love. He’s determined to use people and to change lovers from day to day. I think the story turns around him. He’s the one who destroys Malgosia’s and Derek’s life. There must be a certain thing in his way of acting that women fall in love with him and don’t see his bad character. It’s also him who lets Anja become angry at her sister. He’s the other side the book is about. There is love and love that becomes hate. Sometimes it’s hard to see the divide.but these two things are the moral of the story. Love can be wonderful but it is an easy thing to let love become hate and anger. It’s all up to the people who love. Tibor is also the one who is responsible for Malgosia’s death.

TrumpetAnd once again you can see the two sides. First you might think Malgosia died for love. At least it was her decision to leave Derek. But when you havea closer look at the situation you realize that it was Tibor’s hate that was dressed up as love which caused Malgosia’s death. When Derek first met Malgosia she was playing ´Trumpet Voluntary` on her trumpet. She told Derek that she thought that what happened to the composer is an awful thing. Later the reader of this book has to face the fact that Malgosia must be in a similar situation. Slowly the book becomes sadder when you have to realise that Malgosia was just victim of love, too. But Ithink the main thing is that hate and using people is mistaken as love. This is as tragic as a suicide for love. And I think that’s why the title ´Trumpet voluntary` was chosen. Also, the book shows that love doesn’t depend on people. After Malgosia’s death Derek has a marriage again. Life doesn’t stop after Malgosia’s death. Life goes on and nothing has changed. Tibor is dead, too, but he’s not the only guy with a bad character on earth. Maybe things are going to happen again. It’s all very sad.
