Summary of "About a Boy"
The book "About a Boy" written by Nick Hornby and published in 1998, deals with Marcus (12) and Will (36), who change in the course of the book.
Marcus is an outsider. He hasn't got any friends of his age because he is different from the other children of his age and has got just one close person, his mother Fiona, who has split up with her husband and her ex-boyfriend. But one day he meets Will. Will is a very "cool" person because he knows what you must wear for being cool and he knows modern music bands. After some time become friends. Even though Fiona dislikes Will and doesn't want her son to spend any time with him. Marcus gets yet another friend. She's called Ellie, and she's quite famous at school because she is different; and she is a very big fan of the band Nirvana because she adores Kurt Cobain. Will also gets to know a woman. She's called Rachel and for the first time in probably years he gets a real relationship with a woman instead of only having one-night-stands and playing the nice guy in front of women. Marcus wants Ellie to become his girlfriend, but when they are on their way to visit Marcus's father, Ellie sees a picture of Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide the day before, in a shop window and she thinks that they want to make money with him. She breaks the window with her shoes and they both get problems with the police. During a discussion wit their families Marcus says his opinion for the first time in his life. Besides that he changes his life because he gets friends and hears music and wears clothes like the other children. Will changes his life, too. He gets a steady girlfriend.
