"MOON PALACE is an extraordinary and challenging contemporary novel. It operates in the realm of modern myth: the Wild West, the Moon landings and New York City. It explores the breakdown of family, and in particular fatherhood, under the pressure of modern life. "What about me!" screams the hero, MS, as the identity of his father and grandfather are revealed. The selfishness of modern man and the American worship of individualism are exposed and found wanting. MS's failed ralationship with his Chinese lover becomes an echo of America's treatment of other lands and Vietnam in particular. The image of the moon permeates the story, for Auster the moon is both a dream and a dead place. It is an imaged alternative world but not a place where a man can live. MOON PALACE is a novel of loss: lost fathers, lost loves, lost opportunity and the loss of the American West - a place where the native American lived in harmony with nature and the passages of the moon until the white man came to destroy the 'Indian' idyll" [Paul Stebbings].

And how did the Aurich audience like the performance in Delmenhorst?

There were a lot of positive voices especially concerning the means of a theatre and its way of presenting the stories and characters, yet Marco's behaviour disturbed most of us: Marco is imagined by readers as a rather silent and depressed character while on stage he was moving around like a berserk with full body power and expressive gestures.

For me the "Moon Palace" performance was really fantastic. It was fun, interesting and not as I expected. Actually, it was unimaginable for me how the performance would look like because there are really long passages in the novel which just show Marco's feelings. But exactly these feelings were depicted very well by his breakouts. To sum it up, it was a really good performance! |Nadine S.|

Marco has a very special character and it is obviously difficult to show this on stage; him being in a state of devastation and despair. However, I think that they could not accomplish this in the play. At some point it was quite fun and entertaining to watch, especially when Effing entered the stage, but you couldn´t really lay back and enjoy it because Marco´s performance was quite disturbing and weird - it kind of reminds you of a Broadway show with him creeping over the stage. On balance, I am not satisfied with the transformation of the novel into a play because certain important elements are missing. |Lady Mi|

In my opinion they did a pretty good job. The main character Marco was shown in a special way, the audience was able to imagine his feelings. I don't really think that it was too exaggerated, because he must have been in a bad condition regarding that he almost starved himself to death and did not mind losing all his friends and his home. I also liked that everything was easy to understand and with the plot back in my mind I could easily follow all the action. |Franzi|

Veeeeeery good! I liked the portrayal of Marco's feelings and the one of Effing's journey as well. Everything of importance was on stage and it was more than interesting to see a different interpretation of the story. Still I think that one had difficulties, when not having read the book. Nevertheless, good performance, definitely worth seeing. |?|

I really liked the Delmenhorst performance of Auster's novel "Moon Palace" because in my opinion, the actors as well as the directors did quite a good job. The most interesting scenes were the ones presenting Marco's emotional life and I was amused by the funny elements which made the performance become less tense.
Furthermore, I consider the director's idea of leaving out certain characters, which means Zimmer and George Ugly Mouth, as quite laudable because it enabled the audience to follow the performance a bit more easily. |Anna G.|

In my opinion, the theatre reflects very well the inner situation of Marco and the circumstances he stands in. What is not that well presented is the outer appearance of Kitty Wu because I imagined Kitty Wu as a skinny, Chinese girl with a delicate and graceful behaviour, but that was not presented exactly on stage. The story of Effing and the way Marco gets to know it is very well presented and in an interesting way, too, I think. All in all the novel "Moon Palace" is presented in a very special but positive way whereby the theatre shows feelings and processes of the inner constitution of the characters in a very detailed way. |Venja|
