California - A Trip to the Land of Opportunities

24.02.2008, 7 am, Bremen Airport; Little by little everyone arrived overslept but still excited. After having checked in, we said goodbye to our family and friends and our trip to the land of opportunities started.

Even after 12 hours of flight the mood of everyone was still good but when we heard that the flight to San Diego was delayed we felt exhausted. Through being heartily received at the San Diego airport by our American hosts we soon felt much better.

After making it through our jet lag we had a lot of impressive experiences by getting to know new people, a different culture and a whole new mentality.

Just at our first day in school we' have been asked lot of weird questions, like:" Do they sell beer at a McDonald's in Germany" or " Are there asphalted streets in Germany?". But those stereotypes were rectified and we, our GAPP- group really has a lot of fun and get along with each other.
Our group already got to see lots of sites in the first week.

On Wednesday we went to a day trip to L.A. which was on one site interesting to look at but on the other side a little disappointing. Our imagination how L.A. looks like and presents itself resembled not the fact how it really turned out to be.

Another amazing site was Point Loma, which gave us the possibility to overview the whole town of San Diego and the coast up to Mexico.

The cultural difference between Germany and America turned out to be bigger than we thought it would be because everywhere you go the American flag is proudly presented. There is a huge patriotism but at the same time everything is more conservative than in Germany. No matter whether it is fast food, cars, or roads, everything is much bigger than in Germany. Besides, it is not only a prejudice that Americans use their cellphone much more often than us. Because of these facts we can acknowledge our imagination how American's lives pass.

Our conclusion of the first week: Although California is a crazy place, it is a place you should have seen at least once in your lifetime! We are really excited because there are still two weeks to live here with all its adventures and new people and sites to get to know.
The part we are most looking forward to see is San Francisco.
So, that's it so far from CA.
