Kenny Grissom
He's salesman at a car yard. "
Don't get me wrong- I'm not blaming it all on the Mexicans,(...)
it's everybody - Salvatorians, I-ranians, Russians,
Vietnamese."
He would not even give credit to a Guatemalan lady
and let her drive one of his cars down to her native country.
The way he speaks of foreigners is obviously most
rascist and unethical. Even though he does not know Delaney, he
feels rather comforted in an American's company and therefore does
not expect negative reaction towards his opinion. This shows a
rascist tendancy within the community to get rid of poor people
from abroad.
Jordan
Jordan Mossbacher is Delaney’s and Kyra’s only
child, and he complies with all the clichés of a typically
spoiled child. Though he’s only 6 years old, he sometimes lacks
respect for his parents authority. He loves his Nintendo GameBoy,
his superhero-series on TV and collecting baseball cards. Not that
he’s particularly interested in sports – he collects them for
the sake of having the complete collection.
Jack & Others
Jack and the rest are pointing out that
immigration has ruined California as immigrants are taking away
citizens' jobs
The book, "Tortilla Curtain" is based
around racism and how it affects people in there every day lives.
The book shows how after an incident involving Delaney and Candido
turns Delany's life around, turning him into a racist, stressed
out man.
After Delaney hit Candido in the car he gave him
$20 to settle the dispute. Candido was delighted to receive such a
"large" amount of money. Would Delaney have done this if
the man was a white American citizen. Delaney clearly knew that
the man could take no further action against Delaney or he would
be immediatley deported and would run the risk of not seeing his
wife again. This is a clear form of racism.
Is $20 enough to cover Doctor bills for the
serious injuries sustained by Candido in the incident? Did Delaney
seriously think that he could "buy" his way out of guilt
and responsibility for the incident by offering the "Stupid
Idiot" a small amount of money? Did he really think that the
money would be the end of the incident?
There are many other forms of racism in the book.
These racist shows themselves in the way people act and think in
the book. Delaney's wife, Kyra, was initially not a clear and
distinct racist. But as the book progresses then she begins to
turn into a racist lady, who is all for getting rid of the
Mexicans and building the wall.
The wall is also another form of racism. Is it
really designed to just keep out kyotes and snakes? Would someone
really spend all that money to keep out animals? Or is there more
to the wall then actually meets the eye? Is it just a ploy that is
designed to keep out illegal immigrants?
