The story of Miguelito

Have you ever wondered how a five-year-old illegal thinks and feels? No? Well, then this might be an interesting experience.

I'm cold. I'm hungry. Where is my sleeping stone? Why are we here? There are rats in the corner over there. Why don't we have a home? I want to go back home.
Mum, I had a great day. I sold three chicles for one quarter each! It's enough to buy food for us! Can I have one of those cars I saw in the display window? I've never had a car before.

I also found some butts for Dad. Do you think he'll be happy and put his gun away for once? There also were some gringos. They looked at me as if I was dirt - as always. For a moment I was really scared that they would beat me up for collecting the butts. After all, they always think that we are stealing everything from them.

Do we want to go to the preacher to listen to something from the Bible? What about the story where Jesus fed 5,000 people after some other poor people had shared their food with him?
I looked at my mother and waited for an answer.
"No."
I was so disappointed.
"But why not?"
She only looked at me in a somewhat sad way.

Then she sighed: "You've already heard that story a million times!" A little smile appeared on her face. "Why don't you tell the story to me?"
So I began to tell her the story of Jesus and how he fed the people. At the same time, I got even hungrier.

"When will Dad return?" I asked.
"I don't know. He didn't tell me." She turned away.
A little later I went to sleep. I lay awake for a long time because the Highway was too loud. Dad didn't return from his work. Where was he?
