September 2nd, 2005

Topic: What's to be found on news.bbc.co.uk & topical news

  • please go to the BBC's marvellous website http://news.bbc.co.uk/ and click around to see what it offers (I bet it's even more than you can click...) and whether it's interesting and helpful for your aims concerning language improvements

  • work with WORD and the BROWSER

  • decide on an article about a topic which is of your interest;open Word and prepare for a short oral presentation (notes & vocab on a Word-page), re-read your article, understand it perfectly and sum it up in your words, quoting only the important essentials

  • insert the source of the article at the end of your word-document

  • print your Word-document and let's meet next door at 10.45 h, please

At home: Please read "The French Exchange" thoroughly and bring in 7,75 € on Tuesday

back

 September 9th, 2005

You will have seen the photos of our staging of "Exchange" already, if not: |photos|. And if you want to know about the results of the smoking-survey: |here it is|.

The outing of the three couples in "The French Exchange" seems to be something 'typical British'. Let us work on our perception of the English/the Britons and their perception of us. What sort of stereotypes can you find about each other?

An article from SPIEGEL correspondent Matthias Matussek "What is most British about the Brits?" might be a good start and then

  • just google with terms like 'stereotypes German' etc.
  • and again, collect your results as a word.doc
  • we'll have some brief oral presentations on first results at 10.50 h next door

At home: Please sum up what you've found and write an essay on the topic of "How the British see us and how we see them"

September 16th, 2005

Please research the topic "burial ceremony", funeral, mourning ... by starting to browse the article "Funeral" of wikipedia.org |here it is| for a first idea before you use google.com, please.

  • The basic question is how people in England, Scotland, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand bury their beloved ones and what is different to our usual ceremonies in the church-yard. Collect your insights in a word-document and include as well web-sources as suitable images. One page to be printed out at the end, all documents to be saved on the server (--> donath_lk).
  • Homework: Write a summary of "A Box" by carefully following the guide-lines from the handout. Before doing that you should read the story again and when doing it, look out (underline) parts of the text to work on your second task: What does the reader learn about the narrator/who is he? What does the narrator realize, what does the reader realize? refer to the text, please (quotations, text reference with pages and lines). No lesson on Tuesday as I'll be in Algier.

  • interested in what Algerian teachers, schools, pupils look like? |click|
  • first task: work with the words we listed from "A Box to Keep the Screws In" by help of the English-English dictionaries |here they are|; type the new words in a word.doc and then copy & paste examples of expressions, context usage, etc. from the dictionaries into the document which you should print out at the end or email to your private address (webmail only); learn the words, we'll test it on Wednesday next week ;-)=
  • second task: find your word.doc from last Friday ("Burial Ceremonies") and carry on with your research if necessary or organize the results of last Friday's research to prepare your homework: An essay on this topic, so print out the result of your research and/or email it to your home address; at the end of the essay there should be a list of 10 useful words from the word-field "burial"; please hand in the essay on Tuesday
  • third task @home if you find the time: Read "The Last Thrush" thoroughly as it is quite difficult

  • tell the events from pp. 23-45 (great English countryside, Stevens in Salisbury, impressions of Salisbury; butler's duty/honour, his father)

  • expected: about 2-3 pages word-document, print it out, bring it in on Tuesday, send it to your email-address, if there are any printing problems, send it to my address
  • and read on, if possible up to p. 115
  • enjoy the lesson and the week-end as well, of course - c u on Tuesday
  • yours, dt

Depending on how far you have read, please choose one of the following topics and find partners to work with ;-)

  • Stevens' behaviour around his father's death: How cold can a man be?
  • Stevens' attitude towards Miss Kenton: How cold can a man be?
  • Stevens on the peak of his butler-career: What makes a real butler?

--> write an essay, please, point out your opinion, refer to the text/events (word.doc, pictures welcome)

  • Versaille Treaty (June 28, 1919): what is it? What's the position of GB, F and the US afterwards? (perhaps helpful http://www.wikipedia.org/ - perhaps interesting |this source ???|
  • who was Mosley and what can you find out about his movement?

--> prepare an oral presentation of the facts in an understandable way, please

Homework:

  • read on (p. 211 expected on Tuesday)

back

back

December 2nd, 2005

Well folks, just write about one of the following topics, while we'll divide the course in males and females, for obvious reasons...

The girls, please: Miss Kenton has been writing a diary all the years (well, that's what we assume) - two each could write different entries into her diary like

a) Dear diary, today I started working at Darlington Hall and met Stevens...

b) This morning I wanted to bring a vase with flowers to Stevens...

c) Oh my dearest diary, can you understand what's going on between Stevens and his father?

c) Dear diary, when I told Stevens about leaving Darlington Hall and marriage plans, he...

d) Oh my diary, today I met Stevens who came all the way down to see me here in Cornwall

Two boys, please, choose from one of these topics

  • Stevens definitely wasn't able to fall in love with Miss Kenton
  • How Stevens (mis)understands Miss Kenton's letter and how this is revealed during his narration
  • The novel can be compared to a road-movie
  • An explanation of Stevens's statement "At that moment my heart was breaking"
  • Stevens writes a letter to Miss Kenton when he is back at Darlington Hall and describes, what remains at the end of the day for him
  • a topic of your choice is possible as well, of course

Enjoy writing and don't forget to switch off the coffee machine, please ;-O)
