Possible topics/suggestions

The novel "The Tortilla Curtain" is about loads of topical issues but mainly focusses on (illegal)
immigration from Mexico into the US and clashes between immigrants and
natives.
This could be a topic for your Facharbeiten as well: MOVEMENT of people
worldwide (migration, immigration, emigration, possible clashes of people
and cultures);

CHANGES in our world, of cultures and economies.
GLOBALIZATION has advantages and disadvantages, some were presented in the
presentations.

Ideas & suggestions so far from my side were
- globalization and Enercon (or the Meyerwerft)
- specific aspects from the SPIEGEL articles in the globalization-edition
- various current and/or historical aspects of immigration, migration, emigration.

Novels like
- "Water Music" by T. C. Boyle, the author of "Tortilla Curtain"
- "Brick Lane" by Monica Ali
- "A Fine Balance" by Rohinton Mistry
- "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" by Alexander McCall Smith
...if you research some information about these books you'll see why they
fit to the topics mentioned above.

There are Canadian, Australian and South African novels as well which are definitely worth
working on them and of course more novels from GB, the US and perhaps from NZ as well ;-)

--> Henning Mankell (yeah, the Swedish author!) "Tea-Bag" (to be read in the
English version, of course; quite a topical situation: African woman as a
refugee/illegal in Spain, then on her way to Sweden

--> with Europe trying to prevent people from poorer countries to enter (cf.
the Spanish parts in Morocco and thousands of refugees trying to enter via
these areas into Spain; numerous boat people in the Mediterranean trying to
get into Italy etc.) there's quite a challenging topic to be seen. Most
European countries are affected by this, England especially!

--> Ireland has an interesting history of emigration and right now loads of
Irish who once emigrated are coming back as Ireland is another example of a
tiger state (thanks to EU money); at the same time numerous people from
Baltic states work in Ireland (there's the money and there are the jobs);
there are several topics to be found here, as well literary ones as economic
or "Landeskunde" issues

--> South Africa has been changing for quite a while and yet loads of
challenges are still to be found; Beverley Naidoo has written very
interesting novels (mainly for young readers) which give an idea of the
situation in South Africa, as well historic as topical

--> short stories from South Africa might be interesting as well |about African history|

--> China is changing enormously, as we've heard and can read: Qui Xiaolong,
born in Shanghai 1953, living in the US since 1989, writes super 'detective
novels' about Inspector Chen of the Shanghai Police Bureau. They are
excellent descriptions of China's development and changes and I have learnt
a lot about the current situation in Shanghai & China as well as about
China's history. Click for "Death of a Red Heroine" or "When Red is Black"

--> numerous short stories deal with "Living in a multi-ethnic society", why
not read some and compare them?

--> Earnest Hemingway is a traditional American writer of excellent short
stories. There are interesting changes to be seen concerning his description
of real male persons, the relationship man - woman, etc.; comparison of some
short stories for example from the collection "The Snows of Kilimanjaro"
possible

--> did I mention Charles Dickens' "Oliver Twist" in my last email? His
novel was just recently filmed by Roman Polanski, could be interesting to
compare novel & film.

All in all, just think about your interest and a possible topic. You don't
have to work on a long novel if you don't fancy doing that, short stories
are fine as well and if you don't like to work on literature, think about a
topical issue, be it strictly economical or the result of economic pressure
which we can see when Fortress Europe is the destination refugees want to
reach.
