The 'Troubles' in the novel

Politicial: IRA gives up violence but is going to keep their guns. UVF kills people. 200 teenagers are beaten up with baseball bats by unofficial policemen. Fountain Street bombing unexpected and cruel. Over 20 people killed, several more injured. 

Individual: Max: Her father was shot dead after stepping out of the plane at Belfast airport - an American newsman told that he'd been executed because he was too good at his job to negotiate peace.

Jake: He has trouble with several political ativists. He calls Shague Ghintoss a "Nazi - Poet" and injures Gerry, a "Just Us" member. Jake is also threatened by his former workmates, Crab and Hally. They send him a package with ball bearings as a replacement for rifle bullets and a photograph of Matt and Mami's house. 

Chuckie:  Has a strange discussion on TV with Jimmy Eve.

Roche: gets regularly beaten up by his dad and his mother doesn't seem to care - Is beaten up by IRA men with  a baseball bat after breaking into a car and urinating on the driver's seat. 

Peggy: Suffers from shock after having seen the victims of Fountain Street bombing.
