Chapter 8 Jake
meets Roche, who is trying to sell newspapers and jokes, in a pub.
Roche gets in trouble with Jake's workmates, who start
insulting him. When Roche leaves the pub Jake follows him and starts
talking to the boy, who at the beginning behaves coldly and is not
interested in talking. In contrast to Roche Jake wants to find out
something about him and his life. They get to know each other a
little bit (page164-169). Chapter
9 Roche (twelve-years old), who is driving a stolen
BMW, almost crashes into Jake's car. First they start yelling at
each other but after a short conversation Jake offers to take the
boy home. When they get to Roche's house, Jake notices that he lives
in a poor area. As they say good-bye: "Well
Jake," I waited for the insult ,"you´re all right. See ya'." first
attempts of friendship appear. Waiting for his car to start Jake
witnesses how Roche gets beaten up by his father (pages 201-206). Chapter
15 Jake runs into Roche who is tried to do
graffities. Again he wants to take the boy home but Roche wants Jake
to drop him off before arriving at his house. Jake follows Roche
clandestinely and finds him lying underneath a bench. Since Jake
cares for the boy, he invites him to stay at his apartment (page
289-381). "When I was a kid I got Mamie and
Matt. There's got to be something like that for Roche." Jake
feels sorry for Roche because he knows how it feels like to be in
his situation. That's why he feels obliged to care for the boy (page
306) . Jake is overwhelmed with the thought of
becoming a foster dad for the boy. When Roche notices Jake's
attitude towards him, he decides to leave (page 312). Chapter
17 Roche
breaks into an IRA man's car and
urinates on the seat. That's why he gets beaten up. Randomly Jake
sees how Roche is being shunted into the back of an ambulance and
accompanies him to the hospital. There he waits for several hours
because he feels responsible for Roche and feels bad for keeping him from
moving in. By now the relationship between the two has developed to
something like friendship ( pages 363-367). Chapter
19 Jake visits Roche in the hospital and
finds out that the boy found foster parents who seem to be nice but
inexperienced. When saying good-bye Jake expects some sort of tease
from Roche but instead the boy only says "thanks" (page
393). Kirsten and Sinah
