Ronnie
Clay is a worker building up the hotel Europa in Belfast's centre
again. As a member of the team he is one of Jake's colleagues. The team
consists of members with a Protestant confession.
Jake Jackson is the only Catholic. The oldest worker,
Ronnie Clay, is a man who hates Catholics and who sets the pack on them.
That's the reason why Jake prefers keeping his Catholic
confession towards his colleagues secret . He
not only hates Catholics but Ronnie Clay additionally hates people
with a
non- white colour of the skin. The Arab Rijinder is often treated
badly by the racist Ronnie Clay. That often makes Jake angry
about Ronnie. But
there's something even more terrible than his racist attitude. Ronnie
suffers from a disabilty to sleep. To solve this problem Ronnie had some therapies but they
didn't bring any result. One of the doctors gave him the advice of trying
to think about something nice (trees, beaches etc.) to fall into
sleep. In principle that method didn't have a result either.
Because of not succeeding Ronnie modified this method - he started
thinking about how to erase blacks and non- whites. That made him
able to fall asleep. His
attitude towards women is very doubtful, too. When a woman crosses
his way he starts shouting obscene remarks at her. The chapter to proof this
best is chapter fifteen starting at page 279: Ronnie shouts his obscene remarks to Aoirghe and "asks"
her whether she is willing to do a quick blowjob. Aoirghe, the girl
without any fear, approaches Ronnie who continues shouting obscene
sentences. He
asks her whether she "wants to empty his bollocks". In principle she
does so but in a different way Ronnie would have liked to. She grabs his
testicles and squeezes them so hard that Ronnie nearly loses his
consciousness.
The
woman stopped abruptly and looked Ronnie full in the face. Some
others cheered. they waited for her feeble objection. They became
quiet as she walked up to Ronnie. This has never happened before.
One or two briefly thought that Ronniewas going to recieve some of
the sexual services he had requested. It
was not to be. The woman simply grabbed Ronnie's testicles and
started to squeeze. ronnie crumpled, his knees bent but he did not
fall. The woman squeezed harder. Ronnie's face went white. ..."
(p. 281).
Summarizing this, it
can be concluded that Ronnie Clay is a very crazy man who is more
than ill
