Our spots on "Eureka Street"

Although Dex is a very talented person he got unemployed and started drinking – maybe because of the hopelessness of his situation.

Being an alcoholic he endures a miserable existence but instead of helping and supporting him, Chuckie does not realize that Dex is in need of help not in need of even more whisky.

Dex

Dex lives in Cairo street, Belfast. He once was a poster artist - now he´ s an unemployed alcoholic but still a spray-paint genius. His real name isn´ t mentioned in the novel but he´ s dubbed Dex because of his brilliant facility for painting two-handed. Dex is a very modest guy – he never brags with his participation in a national Coca-Cola advertisement.

One day Chuckie asks Dex to modify the photo which shows Chuckie and the photo in Knock because he wants to impress his Catholic friends although he, himself, isn´ t Catholic. Dex needs four attempts to satisfy Chuckie´ s extraordinary wish and within a week, he got at least six bottles of whisky from Chuckie. Six weeks after finishing his last work of art he died – probably because of alcohol poisoning.

I chose Dex as an example for many people´ s fate who get unemployed and lose their former social status. In some cases this is the reason for getting ostracized and lonely. Often the last resort to drugs like alcohol seems to be the only way to drown their sorrow and to stifle their depression.

A lot of people, the employed as well as the unemployed, children, teens, adults and elderly people suffer from depression although it is unrecognized many times.

Nowadays it is a national disease which can gain control of anybody.

That´ s why we have to act differently than Chuckie.

Opening our eyes and taking responsibility .

Enclosed the lyrics of “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day which may be written by a person in Dex´ situation.

It is about…well, you´ ll see.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams

I walk a lonely road

The only one that I have ever known

Don´ t know where it goes

But it´ s home to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street

On the BLVD. of broken dreams

Where the city sleeps

And I´ m the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone. I walk alone.

I walk alone. I walk alone.

My shadow´ s the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart´ s the only thing that´ s beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

‘til then I walk alone

I´ m walking down the line

That divides me somewhere in my mind

On the borderline of the edge

And where I walk alone

Read between the lines of what´ s

Fucked up and everything´ s alright

Check my vital signs to know I´ m still alive

And I walk alone

I walk alone. I walk alone.

I walk alone. I walk alone.

My shadow´ s the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart´ s the only thing that´ s beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

‘til then I walk alone

I walk alone. I walk alone.

I walk this empty street

On the BLVD. of broken dreams

Where the city sleeps

And I´ m the only one and I walk alone

My shadow´ s the only one that walks beside me

My shallow heart´ s the only thing that´ s beating

Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me

‘til then I walk alone
