Chuckie's appearances throughout the novel

Chapter 2

• has a big hangover |spot on depression|

• goes for a long walk through the city

• he starts planning on making loads of money

• meets Stoney Wilson on the way, who annoys him and somehow manages to make him a bad conscience because Chuckie doesn’t live an ordinary and level life– in contrary to Stoney

• “history” of the famous - people – loving Lurgans, Chuckie meets the Pope, manipulation of a picture |spot on Dex|

• meets Max, he gets her phone number and ends up “in love” with her but decides it would be too early “to touch himself for her” (p.39)

Chapter 3

• Chuckie has a meeting with John Long, whom he tells in a detailed way about his plans of setting himself up in business

• he listens to a talk between Caroline Causton and his mother

• he writes down all the totals which he has done up to his thirtieth birthday – since that was the day he had made all his important decisions

• he decides to go to a phone box to call Max – later he sees Stoney Wilson  

 

Chapter 4

• tells Jake that he has met a nice girl, now he is starting to act weird |spot on Max|

• has success with dildo business

• invites Jake | spot on Jake |to the double date

Chapter 6

• meets with the Industrial Resource Board (RB) hoping to get money

• persuading them with the help of lies and fantasies Chuckie receives eight hundred thousand pounds to get his business started

• asks himself what conversations are for, has been asking himself this question since childhood, conversations seem to keep him from having fun

Chapter 12  

• Chuckie hears of the bombing by telephone-call from Luke Findlater

• since his mother is not at home, he is worried and goes to Fountain Street

• when he sees a policeman's face, he knows something really bad has happened

• he sincerely  hopes no one has died

Chapter 13

• like a pimp: smoking a Havanna, wearing a golden ring and an expensive tuxedo

• huge tips: 100 pounds for Doc and 50 pounds for Roche |spot on Roche| just to buy some flowers

• orders nearly everything from a catalogue (a house full of stuff)

• Max went  back to America -> Chuckie misses her and thinks about how to follow and get her back

Chapter 14

• he’s willing to invest a lot of money to find Max

• he would do whatever necessary to find Max

• travels to the Unites States

• meets Max' family

• America scares him/terrifies him

• suddenly misses his friends, knows where he belongs  -> Belfast

• he’s proud of availing a son, feels like he’s useful

• contributed to something

• he’s sure that their child will not let them be apart

• realizes that America‘s violence is not comparable to Belfast’s violence

• their expected child seems to have changed Chuckie’s life

Chapter 15

• Chuckie is still in the States

• Chuckie wants Jake to work for him

• Max is pregnant

• Chuckie is going to marry Max  

Chapter 16

• in America

• on a parking lot waiting for Max who is trying to satisfy her crave for chocolate croissants

• Chuckie is delighted by mornings

• begins to wonder about ozonesphere, earth and sea –> watched environmental TV program

• old lady told Chuckie about pregnancy, rented hotelroom, thought, slept, rented car and drove to Max -> proposal

• Max tells Chuckie about earlier pregnancy )see page 316 starting l. 29)

• child lived, Max realizes her drug problem -> see p.317 ll. 25/26 and 30-32 p.318

• Chuckie manages to take her fear of another birth -> looks after Max for a week

• decides to earn money

• hopes Max’s genetic contribution will dominate his

• Max and Chuckie talk about the future

• Chuckie calls his mother -> only talks to Caroline, something is wrong with her tone

• John Evans |spot on John Evans|whom he got to know on a plane is very interested in his business -> offers 5 mio. $ on the spot

• Chuckie meets business people in Denver -> takes advantage of the American ignorance about Ireland

Chapter 18

• Chukie doesn’t want his mother to love another woman

• Chuckie takes the first step towards a good relationship with both women

• wants his mother to be happy

• not concerned with what his mother does

• understands that his mother loves him

• worries about released terrorists (->troubles again?)

• he never knew anyone who actively fought in the fight for peace

• visits a talkshow and declares to found a new party

• meets OTG-guy and follows him -> begins to think about OTG |spot on OTG|

• Loves Max and somehow does all this for her
