My spots on "Eureka Street"

Ceasefire in Northern Ireland

..................................................................................................................

On August 31, 1994, the IRA announced a complete cessation of violence. While Loyalist guerillas cooperated by announcing their own ceasefire, the ceasefire agreements did not go far enough for the Unionist leaders---only disarmament could signify a commitment to peace. Nonetheless, Gerry Adams, Sinn Féin's leader, defended the statement and called for direct talks with the British government.

In "Eureka Street", the ceasefire plays an important role in the plot. Jake is not completely unpolitical and he often considers the new situation. There are still many people killed every day; the bomb in Fountain Street affected everybody; and everybody, even his most primitive work-mates, has an opinion towards the ceasefire.

Furthermore, Chuckie also profits from the ceasefire for his new business ideas.
