Where do they sail?

The crew of these livestock carriers start from the West coast of Australia, actually from Fremantle (a small town close to Perth)...

What are the jobs of the crew members on the ships?

The ships, called livestock carriers, which are built by the Meyer Werft, have a installed fodder system, a drinking water system, and a ventilation system. All these systems work  automatically. To conclude from this, there is not much work to do for the crew.

On August 23, 1996, a livestock carrier called Uniceb had a disaster and one member of the 54 crew and 67.000 sheep died in this accident. The ITF (International Transport Federation) reported that the crew was not paid and that they had to sleep on deck with the livestock. They also reported that the crew of Uniceb was not being paid, inexperienced and that there was low maintenance particularly of the engine rooms.

The  most important people on board are the ship’s officers and the ship’s captain. The captain steers the ship. He gives orders to the officers and the crew. The ship’s officers are responsible for the safety on the ship. They navigate the ship and they coordinate the activities of the crew.
