MEAT AND ISLAM

Islam has very strict regulations concerning meat:

They are not allowed to eat pork because it is impure and carries diseases. Furthermore, they use a method to slaughter the cattle or sheep which seems quite cruel to us.

Without any stun gun blow, tradition requires that slaughter must be carried out with one single cut to the throat, while the animal's face is turned toward the holy city of Mecca. It has to be realized by a pious man and God's name must be invoked over it. Anti-cruelty-campaigners say the sheep remain conscious of the pain for 30-40 seconds, cattle even up to 90 seconds.

They assert that this method is a wrong interpretation of the Quran and that it is inhumane and outdated. These knife-only killings, the so-called Halal meat preparation, are still the normal practice throughout the Middle East and in parts of Africa and Asia.

This problem is also concerned with livestock carriers and thus especially with Australia since it is the world's main export nation of sheep. Commonwealth forbids Halal preparation of meat; though overseas it is allowed, where the slaughter conditions are very bad:  the tile floor is wet and slippery from water and blood; the animals are distressed because of the smell and having seen others slaughtered.
