Amongst
Australia's five major general cargo ports, Fremantle, the harbour
of Perth, is the closest to Singapore, which is just a journey of
four and a half days by sea.
It
is very often a first and last port of call for ships operating
between Australia and overseas destinations, making Fremantle a
strategic port for trans-shipment of cargoes as well as direct
services.
Fremantle is a port of call on many trade routes and is able to
accommodate a variety of ships and cargo. The facilities at the Port
of Fremantle are world-class. For example, ships carrying containers
up to 80 tonnes, gas or liquid bulk goods or thousands of cars get
loaded and unloaded in Fremantle.
Ships
specialising in transporting livestock also visit Fremantle and
service routes between Australia, the Middle East and South East
Asia. These fast, multistorey vessels accommodate sheep and beef
cattle, along with fodder.
