The story "The Typewriter" written by Beverly
Naidoo published in the book "Out Of Bounds" in 2001 deals
with a 11 year old girl called Nandi. Although she is still going to
school she stays at home because schools are closed. Blacks refuse to
be taught with "white rules" and protest against
apartheid.
During one night her cousin Esther comes to her window. She needs help
because she nearly was caught by the police during a demonstration.
Two of her companions were already arrested. Now she fears that the
police will do anything to find her - inlcuding a search of her
grandmother's house. And if the found the typewriter with which
Esther made the leaflets for the black protests, her granny Khulu
would be arrested as well. So she orders Nandi to go to her
grandmother in order to tell her what happened to Esther and to hide
the typewriter.
At her grandmother's they take the typewriter and leave the house
towards the districts of the whites. When Khulu tries to hide it in
one of the white's garage she is caught by a white woman and send into
jail.
