Main
character(s)
..................................................................................................................
|
Nandi:
Nandi is an
11-year-old girl living together with her mother and
her three-year-old twin brothers in Bantu. She is the viewpoint-character of the story. She is too young to take actively part in
the students' rights movement, but gets first hand information
about the happenings. She is part of the conspiration and
accompanies her grandmother when she goes to hide the typewriter.
- Khulu:
Khulu is Nandi's grandmother. She works in Johannesburg (Jo'burg)
selling fruits to Whites. Although she does not actively support
her granddaughters in their fight she seems to have been active
in that movement when she was younger. But when Esther
gets in trouble she does not hesitate to try to hide the
typewriter in a safe place so the girls can retrieve it later.
But that leads ultimately to her being arrested and sent to jail.
