Summary
The story "The Playground" written by Beverly Naidoo deals with
the eleven-year-old, black girl Rosa who is attending a white school
after the government opened all white schools for everyone.
In school she is faced with hatred by parents and other students who
reject Blacks. The only one who stands up for her is Hennie, a white
boy, whom she grew up with, because her mother works for his family
and she used to look after his twin siblings.
Historical
Background
In 1990 Nelson Mandela was released form jail after having been
imprisoned for twenty-seven years. The whole world is watching him
walking out of jail to help negotiate a new system of
government.
In 1994 all people of South Africa are called to vote for a new
government. This also includes Blacks for the first time. The
African National Congress forms the government and Nelson Mandela
becomes President of the "rainbow government".
In 1995 for the first time all-white schools have to be opened for
everyone. There are many white parents who demonstrate against this
law.
