| On
21 March 1960 at least 180 black Africans were injured (there are
claims of as many as 300) and 69 killed when South African police
opened fire on approximately 300 demonstrators, who were protesting
against the pass laws, at the township of Sharpeville,

"One
Day, Lily, One Day" - 1960
|
|
What
is the story about? ..................................................................................................................
|
-
The story "One day, Lily, one day" is about a little girl
who lives in South Africa with her parents. They are quite liberal,
they do not make any differences between blacks and whites and there
are often black meetings held at their house. That is why her father
gets arrested at times.
- Lily grows up thinking black people are the same
as whites and
do have the same rights. That attitude changes when she becomes
friends with Caroline, whose parents are against black people. They
hate them just because they fear them for being different.
|
When there is a demonstration of black people in town
(historic fact: blacks were protesting against carrying a passport
around, in
Sharpeville on March 22, 1960) people in school are scared and panic.
Everyone is being sent home and it seems as if the blacks are a huge
threat.
At home Lily realizes that a black friend of hers has been
injured at the demonstration, when police started to fire into the
crowd. Next day in school everyone turns their backs onto Lily
because Caroline told them she is friends with black people.
