"The Dare" - 1948

Reactions of people to apartheid

..................................................................................................................

The main problem is that the adult white people exemplify the behavior against black and the white children adapt the treatment against the black Africans.

Veronica sees her neighbour standing in front of a black child,  torturing him with a cane till he can't take it any more. Veronica can't bear that sort of inhumane treatment but has to observe the scene until the boy's cry is "reduced to a soft whimpering".
In this story, there is an open-minded girl that has got no experiences with racial prejudices, on the contrary: She likes her black maid Rebecca:
She lives in Johannesburg and has got a black maid called Rebecca. With her she talks about everything and shares her secrets.

But during the story she learns the benefits of being white in a land controlled by white people. She starts to take advantage of her white skin, even if black people have to suffer for her pleasure.
