MARIKA: Marika's
parents own a small
farm. They are
growing fruit and vegetables and are keeping a few animals. They
have got a small cottage for visitors. Marika has got three
brothers and since her tenth birthday she doesn't want to play with
dolls because the boys have always teased her for doing that. She
starts collecting snakes, spiders and other insects to be accepted
by her brothers. VERONICA:
| She lives in
Johannesburg and has got a black maid called Rebecca. With her she
talks about everything and shares her secrets. |
Veronica and her
family visit the farm of Marika's parents every year. (Her father
had been visiting the farm since he was a child.) Veronica had
played "house" with Marika in the donga behind the
farmhouse for years. She used to bring her dolls and
doesn't
understand why Marika doesn't want to play with them any longer
after her tenth birthday. She hates it when her father calls her
"Ronnie" because the boys are even making jokes about
Marika calling her "Nicky". She is in fear about
the dare she has to do because Marika told her that her own one was so terrible that she
isn't even able to talk about it. Veronica
is looking for a way to get out of the dare. She wishes her parents would ask her to spend the day together with
them. She just decides to do the dare because she wants to belong
to "the gang" of Marika and her brothers because there are
no other children to play with.
