France: The migration conflict

In the 1950's, the post war years, France first welcomed large numbers of immigrants as workers facing the need of economical restauration.

It wasn't until the 1980's that the atmosphere suddenly started to change: hostility, tensions and xenophobia rose among the French who didn' t feel the immediate necessity of migrant workers any longer.

Still, even today thousands of emigrants apply to enter France, having had to leave their countries for being pursued, for political, religious, ethnic, social or family reasons or who are looking for a job. There is a severe controversy on those emigrating economically inspired, they are suspected to solely aim at profiting from the welfare system and kept outside. Similarly, people claiming to be eligible, since their home countries once were colonised by France, are detained now to reduce the number of immigrants.

Opposing the anti-immigrant attempts, France has recently come to the realization that demographical and economical developments will soon require workers from abroad. The result of this contradiction is the selection of migrants from France's selfish point of view at the expense of many asylum seekers who are in vital need for a new place to live.

Even ignoring the morally unacceptable aspect of this defensive policy, it is highly doubtable that it will work out: En contraire, emigrants are dragged onto the illegal path into France, having to endanger themselves and their families and affecting the human traffic crime to grow steadily. Still exceeding this, they are likely to be welcomed by the black market as workers, facing worst exploitation while living in permanent fear of being detected.

Focussing on the legislative, there is to be observed a paralysis concerning migration policies:Its obviously highly explosive effect on society so far prevented politicians from rationally and actively seeking future-oriented solutions. It's an unpopular topic in view of elections, especially among France's influential right-wing parties. A populist adaptation of migration politics to the voter's will would be lethal for any long term, effective and ethical policy.

The historian Bade criticizes the entire contemporary European migration politics as follows: "As long as the counterpart of defence of refugeesis missing, which is to fight the causes of flight, this defence remains a historical scandal, which future generations will bear in mind to judge Europe's comprehension of humanity in the [...] 21st century. People without permission of residence, so called "sans-papiers", accuse the French government of reentering the shameful colonial age, treating immigrants like goods, introducing 3rd millenium slavery while carrying out exploitation, discrimination and degradation.
