Immigration into Germany

Facts

The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Germany says:

No one seeking asylum in Germany can be sent back to his home country when his life is threatened because of his race, his nationality, his gender or religion, because of him belonging to a certain social group or because of his political attitude.

Numbers of the year 2001

In the year 2001 there were 88.287 people applying for asylum in Germany. This means the amount of  refugees increased by 12,4% compared to the year before. With the increasing number of asylum seekers, the number of immigrants actually being accepted is increasing as well, from 3% to 5,3%.

Most of the refugees come from Iraq with 17167 people. This number increased by 48%. The following home countries are Turkey with 10869 and Jugoslavia with 7758. There were  also 5837 people from Afghanistan and people from Russia and Vietnam.

Because of the increasing number of asylum seekers in Germany, the Bundesinnenminister Otto Schily (SPD) wants to reform the right of immigration, to make the decision procedure much quicker, more efficient and to be more safe of misuse.

Last year the „Bundesamt“ made 107,193 decisions concerning asylum seekers:

5,716 persons (5.3%) were given asylum. 17,003 persons got „Abschiebeschutz nach § 51 bs. 1 des Ausländergesetzes.“

58,785 asylum applications (54.8%) were turned down and 25,689 (24,0%) were "somehow settled" (German “sonst wie erledigt”).

57,404 decisions are still to be made.
