The background is quite simple. In recent years many Mexicans
immigrated into the US illegally. Two of the main characters are
among them. The book deals with the life of illigal immigrants and
wants to show the difference between theirs and the life of the
upper class. In the book we learn about the situation as it is
today and how the society, symbolized in some of the caracters,
deals with it and what different opinions and attitudes there are.
The caracter candidó for example is described as a typical mexican
strongback, who leaves the country of his origin to earn money in
the United States for some seasons of the year sending it back to
Mexico to feed his family. In fact Mexico depends on the money
migrants send home: remittances are the country's third largest
source of dollars, after tourism and oil. The money they send home
to Mexico - $2.5 billion to $3.9 billion - is equal to about half
the direct foreign investment in Mexico. For
