| Sam was a Negro. He wasn't

strong from rowing over the lake in his
selfmade boat. Sam had a donkey called
Mary Lou, which was almost fifty years
old. Sam sold onions in the town of Green

Sam helped Miss Katherine to fix the
schoolhouse and they fell in love.
Someone saw them kissing. But a Negro
kissing a white woman was against the
law. The people in town wanted to hang
Sam. He ran away with Miss Katherine.
They tried to escape with Sam's boat. But
they had to leave Mary Lou behind. She
was killed. They couldn`t get over the
lake, because of Trout Walker, whose boat
was faster than Sam's boat. Then Sam was
shot dead by Trout Walker.
